Section B—TRACKSIDE DETECTORS



  1. The type and location of all trackside detectors will be listed for each individual subdivision.

The following detector instructions apply:

  1. Train speed of at least 10 MPH must be maintained while train is moving over hot box detector when practicable.
  2. Do not stop over hot box detector when practicable.
  3. When trackside detector is activated, train must be stopped and required inspection made. If defect is located and it cannot be corrected, car must be set out at the first available track provided it is safe to be moved.
  4. When car suspected of having hot bearing is set out, an orange fluorescent defect tag is to be filled out and attached to the car's waybill.

  1. Radio Readout (Talker) Detector:

  1. Detectors report the axle count location of a defect from the front of train.
  2. If defect is detected during movement, the system will immediately transmit a defect message.
  3. Example: "Red Rock detector milepost 121.3. Stop your train! Stop your train! First hot box axle 210 on left side."

  4. When defect message is received by train crew, the train must be stopped and inspected for indicated defect(s).
  5. When train has passed the detector with no defects found, the system will transmit "no defect" message.
